Sharing the Gospel & Making Disciples…Part 2

If you haven’t read Part 1 yet, you can find it here…. https://rootedinchrist317.com/2020/10/09/sharing-the-gospel/

Once we grasp who Jesus is, then I believe our next step in being prepared to share the Gospel and make disciples is to understand we are equipped to do so. Let’s look at Acts 1:6-9: “So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time? He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Forty days have passed since Jesus’s resurrection. He had been appearing to His disciples along with many other people during these forty days. These verses here take place on the Mt. of Olives and it is a conversation between Jesus and His disciples.  Some of them are still looking for a physical restoration of the temple and Jesus tells them it is not their place to know the time or season for that as that is the authority of the Father. But then Jesus makes a mic drop statement to them right before He ascends into heaven. He tells them they WILL (notice it doesn’t say might or could or possibly) receive power from the holy Spirit and they WILL be His witnesses!!!

These statements are the foundation to our calling as believers! Everyone who puts their faith and hope in Jesus will receive power from the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses. This power is what equips us to share the Gospel and make disciples.

So you might be thinking, “What if that’s not enough?” Well let’s take a look at this power!

This power is the SAME POWER that:

  • Was present at creation (Genesis 1 & 2)
  • Turned dry bones into a army (Ezekiel 37)
  • A major player in the immaculate conception of Jesus (Luke 1)
  • Caused John the Baptist to leap in his mother’s womb while Jesus was in Mary’s womb (Luke 1) – (talk about some power!)
  • Raised Jesus from the dead

And these are just a handful of hundreds of events all throughout Scripture that the power of the Holy Spirit was instrumental in and it is this same power that fills believers.

Strong’s definition of power is “power residing in a thing, force, ability, abundance of strength”. Do you get that — we have the power of the Holy Spirit residing in us, giving us the ability and abundance of strength to do what we have been called to do — share the Gospel and make disciples?

So what’s holding us back?

Father, thank you for Jesus – our High Priest, our Mediator, our Redeemer. Thank you for the Holy Spirit filling us with the same power that was present at creation and the resurrection of Jesus. Give us an unquenchable urging to share the Gospel and make disciples. Help us to remember You have equipped each and every believer with the ability to fulfill this calling You have placed on our lives. In Jesus Name, Amen
